Delay in Sanding Time

Oct 31, 2025 | Paint Defects and Solutions

Problem Description:

After the painting process, sanding may be required after a certain period. However, a delay in the sanding time indicates that the paint has not sufficiently hardened or reached the desired consistency. This situation can lead to improper sanding and ultimately compromise the quality of the final paint coat.

Possible Causes:

Slow Drying: If the paint layer does not dry quickly enough, sanding becomes difficult. This may be caused by environmental factors such as low temperature and high humidity.
Excessively Thick Paint Application: When paint layers are applied too thickly, the underlying layers may remain soft, making sanding challenging.
Insufficient Drying Time: Not allowing adequate drying time between paint layers can prolong the sanding time.

Solutions and Precautions:

Ensure Proper Drying Conditions: Monitor and maintain ambient temperature and humidity during painting. Ideal conditions are a temperature between 18-24°C (64-75°F) and relative humidity between 45-65%.
Careful Paint Selection: To mitigate slow drying issues, use faster-drying paints or specialized primers.
Avoid Thick Layers: Apply paint in thinner coats to allow faster drying and facilitate sanding.
Allow Adequate Drying Time: Ensure sufficient drying time between coats, confirming that each layer is fully dried before sanding.
Choose the Correct Thinner for Solvent-Based Products: Thinners containing methanol dry the paint surface quickly but do not accelerate curing at the base layer effectively. Therefore, using high-quality thinners is crucial.
