Problem Description:

The delayed drying or incomplete curing issue in furniture coatings, particularly with polyurethane, water-based, acrylic, and cellulosic paints, occurs when the paint fails to dry within the expected timeframe or does not fully cure. This results in a sticky or soft surface, preventing the achievement of a smooth and durable final finish.

 

Possible Causes:

Humidity and Atmospheric Conditions: High humidity and low temperatures can slow the drying process. Water-based paints may fail to dry at the anticipated rate in environments with excessive moisture.
Excessively Thick Coats: Thick paint layers inhibit the drying of inner sections. While the outer surface may appear dry, inner layers remain uncured.
Insufficient Ventilation: Poor air circulation after application prevents the evaporation of volatile compounds, extending drying times.
High Paint Viscosity: Paints with elevated viscosity may not spread evenly, leading to prolonged drying.
Incorrect Component Ratios or Selection in Solvent-Based Paints: Non-adherence to recommended component ratios or improper use of hardeners results in delayed drying and difficulty in sanding.

 

Solutions and Precautions:

Maintain Optimal Environmental Conditions: Control temperature and humidity in the painting area. Ideally, temperature should range between 18-24°C (64-75°F) with humidity around 45-60%.
Apply Thin Coats: Thin layers promote faster drying; thick coats obstruct curing of the paint’s interior.
Ensure Adequate Ventilation: Provide sufficient airflow to facilitate evaporation of solvents and accelerate drying.
Adjust Paint Viscosity: If necessary, thin the paint to the appropriate viscosity to ensure proper flow and drying speed.
Use Correct Hardeners for Solvent-Based Products: Follow recommended hardener ratios for two-component (2K) paints.
